Physics 20 is where students discover that physics is applied math. Vector components and free-body diagrams are the two skills that separate students who cope from students who drown, and neither is intuitive.
How we teach it
We spend disproportionate time on free-body diagrams and vector resolution, because almost every dynamics problem reduces to drawing the situation correctly. Students who can draw it can usually solve it.
