Math 31 is optional, which means it is often taught quickly and assumed rather than built. Students arrive from 30-1 without the algebraic stamina calculus demands, and limits are conceptually unlike anything earlier in the sequence.
How we teach it
We teach limits properly rather than as a formality, then build differentiation until the rules are automatic. Students taking 31 to prepare for university calculus get extra work on the algebra that first-year courses assume.
